Introduction to the basics of InDesign and techniques needed to create a range of professional documents, including time-saving and efficiency features. Learn to work accurately and efficiently as you progress on to more advanced document designs.

Adobe InDesign beginners and intermediate course summary

Who is the course aimed at ?
This course is aimed at those who currently have little or no InDesign or desktop publishing skills, and would like to learn the basics of Adobe InDesign and desktop publishing.

Course requirements
You should have good general computer skills. Some previous knowledge of design software will be helpful, particularly Adobe Photoshop for image resizing and colour correction.

Numbers
One to one or small group of up to 4 trainees. Trainees in a group should have the same skill level and the same requirements.

Day 1 - Introduction to Adobe InDesign and desktop publishing

Overview of the main tools and palettes in InDesign
Setting Preferences
Moving around the document
Zooming in and out (Zoom tool, keyboard shortcuts, menus)

Creating a New InDesign Document
Starting a new document
Setting documents size and margins, columns and other options
Using guidelines to help control layout
Modifying document properties
Saving a document and organising files

Shapes and Selected Objects
Shape tools & Frame tools
Line tools
Selection tools
Set precise dimensions for an object
Accurately positioning an object
Duplicate objects
Group objects
Lock objects
Align & Distribute
Create multiple copies with equal spacing using Step & Repeat

Images
Add images to a page
Discussion of correct file types, image resolution and image size

Create a small simple document with text and images. This could be a simple newsletter, poster, basic leaflet, magazine advert, or other small document.

Creating a spread of two or more pages
Creating Master Pages
Applying a Master Page to document pages
Editing and duplicating Master Pages
Automatic page numbering

Working with Text Frames and Type
Threading type between two or more text frames
Viewing and changing text threading
Using the Story Editor to edit text
Using Find & Replace to change repeated text elements in a document
Using the Eyedropper tool to pick up attributes from another block of text
Using Text Wrap to wrap text around a picture or shape
Running type along a shaped path
Convert type into outlines
Inline graphics (using graphics inside a line of type)

Typography
More text formatting and typography settings:
Drop caps, paragraph rules, keep options
Controlling line breaks, paragraph breaks and column breaks
Tabs
Bullets and Numbering options
Glyphs and special characters e.g. • © ™  etc.
Showing hidden characters (paragraphs, tabs, spaces, etc.) within the text

This is a typical course outline. It may be modified to better suit your requirements.

A one day beginners introduction may be available if your needs are very basic (day 1 from the course outline above).

A one day intermediate course is available if you are already familliar with the basics of InDesign.
